Classrooms, how to import test questions from GenTest

GenTest is a program with a test question bank that covers all the subjects of the school curriculum from First Grade to University.

If you want to download it and try it you can do it from this link, although it is programmed for Windows environments it works perfectly in FreeX and other GNU/Linux systems through Wine. EduTicTac collaborates by hosting on your server the images and sounds that allow you to use the tests exported from GenTest on the platform Classrooms (and in any other Moodle). The instructions to do so will be found in the Documentation folder and in this PDF.

We added to the post a series of videos of how Gentest works together with Aules to have a large bank of test questions available:

Below, for those who do not know the tool, I copy a text explaining what GenTest is and a little bit of its history that I have found on the net, it is outdated but it will help you to get an idea of what it offers:

In the year 2001 Gentest was born, but it was during the course 2002-2003 when it was perfected and ready to present itself in society. Our goal is none other than to share this tool with the desire that it can be useful in the daily work of teachers..

Objectives

Gentest is a digital knowledge manager. It is a program tailor-made for teachers, by teachers. Its objective is the generation of didactic content and offers a complete solution for the creation and structuring of didactic materials, that can serve a wide range of teachers and students of almost all levels and almost all areas.

Description

It is a robust computer tool formed by a single Access database that can support text, image, sound and also video, and two programmes, one for teachers, called Gentest and another for students, called Test.

In total the three applications, next to the images and their files occupy 826 megabytes spread over 249 directories and 8627 records. The database has 60.285 Records. Each record contains stage information, level, area, question, Answer A, Answer B, answer C, correct answer, author's name, sound path and image path. Contains items, covering almost all Primary content blocks, High school, High school, 2 UNED Access Course, Official Language Schools, Vocational training and questions about heritage aspects of the towns and cities of the Vinalopó valleys and also of other areas of the Valenian Community such as La Safor and Camp de Morvedre.

We wanted the database to have an open structure and be totally modifiable. It is our desire that they can benefit from what it means to share the work thanks to the possibilities that information and communication technologies offer us today.. The database has a utility that we have called a content map so that any teacher who decides to join the project can know what we have and logically what they can contribute.

On our website (http://cefirelda.infoville.net) we hang the updates and the files that are generated. In order to create content, we have called for training actions in many different areas. This has allowed us to move from 4000 course records 2001-2002 to 33.700 in the 2002-2003 and, in this last course, 2003-2004, until 60.285 Questions. This year it will appear on DVD instead of CD ROM, as in previous editions. As for the authors, I want to emphasize that more than two hundred teachers have contributed their work and the response has been very gratifying, both by teachers and by the students themselves. Gentest.exe allows you to generate tests, both for use on the computer itself and for printing. In either of the two modalities, screen or paper, we can include images.

This version includes 4629 digital photographs related to multiple themes. Images are also available for use in PowerPoint presentations, in Word documents as didactic support or in any other program. Once the test has been prepared, we can print it with or without answers, save or export it to Word. Test properties can be configured: time to response, punctuation, possibility of going back and type of report. This can be saved in a file, print or display on screen, and contains: student's name, date, course, theme, score and includes only the mistakes made by the student with their answers and those they should have given. As far as the values that we have assigned by default are: 45 seconds per response, no turning back is allowed, 1 point each correct answer and 0 every wrong answer. The report appears on the screen. As for the predefined tests, are adjusted to the content blocks of the different subjects.

But what we highlight about the program is that any teacher can use what other teachers like him did., you can alter it and then choose how and how many questions each test should contain. At the moment we have addressed the Primary, THE ESO, The Baccalaureate, some FP, and the access course of the National University of Distance Education. For the next course we plan to prepare a version that allows us to address Early Childhood Education. It has helped us to program materials for all types of students. It is very useful for language learning, due to text combination, image and sound. We have paid special attention to immigrants, preparing a Spanish block for foreigners. The program is especially useful to use materials for students with different learning rhythms.

Allows departments to plan ahead. Different materials can be made for each class, and even for each 3 pupil. Heads of studies, tutors and educational psychologists can have activities prepared for the guards, tutorials etc.. Gentest also serves to make curricular adaptations, detect levels of competence and is an excellent diagnostic tool, review and consolidation of contents. As the last great advantage, each teacher can easily edit their own materials. The program for students has the option of 1 or 2 players and, as we have already indicated, allows a student to review the blocks of content that he has to face from the time he is in Third grade until he arrives at the University.

In a short time we will be able to offer materials for the few gaps that we have left in Primary, ESO and Baccalaureate. We want to invite everyone to experience the program and contribute content.

Conclusion

In this knowledge society, the contents, knowledge and experience are an asset of great value. We wanted to promote cooperation between teachers, we have invited them to share and contribute experiences so that a social return can be produced so that it serves for many to take advantage of the experience and work of others who have already walked the path. We have created a collective digital work that has been carried out synergistically and intelligently taking advantage of technology. Behind this work there is a lot of experience, a lot of know-how, a lot of craft and many hours of work. Generate knowledge, turning it into the network available to others and promoting the use of new technologies has been what has driven us to launch this project We wanted to introduce changes and we have made a cocktail between information and communication technologies and human resources.

The result has surprised us ourselves. We have managed to persuade many teachers to come together around a common project, generate materials and share them. Together they form a small treasure. We are convinced that sharing enriches; enabling the transmission of experiences saves many hours in having to reinvent the wheel and, above all, feel useful da fuerza to follow trabajando.
